New Members

Active membership in this organization shall be limited to members of the Fire Departments from Onondaga County and neighboring counties.

All applicants must be a member in good standings of an Onondaga county or neighboring county Fire Department. OCFUSRT, Inc. membership will be terminated upon that member leaving their home Fire Department.


All new members are required to:
  • Participate in an interview with officers, safety and training committee members and dive masters.
  • Participate in a six (6) month probation period. During this period a minimum of four (4) meetings are required. After the six month period, the member shall be reviewed by the safety and training committee and recommendation shall be made as to full membership.
  • During the six (6) month probationary period, the new member shall be allowed at all calls, but will not be allowed to dive.

The following requirements of the probationary period are as follows:    

  • The 1st month of attendance shall be the interview and will be shown the basic line tender procedures.
  • The 2nd month of attendance shall be as line tenders.
  • The 3rd month of attendance shall be their first dive, which will be a check out dive. This dive shall be conducted by a Team Dive master or Team Master Diver.

The check out dive must consist of the following procedures:

  • Basic scuba skills - i.e., masks clearing, cramp removal, etc.
  • Emergency procedures - i.e., low on air, out of air, etc.
  • Basic search patterns - i.e., diver must demonstrate search patterns while being tethered and operated by a line tender.
  • These are the minimum skills required.

Diving members: All applicants must be recognized by their home fire department as a qualified diver before becoming qualified as a diving member of the OCFUS&RT, Inc. Qualifications must be submitted in writing from the applicants respective Fire Chief. All applicants will meet with the Safety & Training Committee or a Dive Master of the OCFUS&RT, Inc. for the purpose of evaluation of the applicant's diving skills.

All other members of the OCFUSRT, Inc. will be classified as dive tenders, honorary members or social members.
